Future wireless technologies promise huge benefits for businesses and users as wireless connectivity remains a crucial utility of a modern digital society. Furthermore, the development of advanced telecom capabilities will influence broader technology development. With the rapid pace of innovation, we are at a critical juncture in the development of future wireless systems. Sir Jim McDonald, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, emphasised that fostering intersectoral and international partnerships while leveraging our existing strengths is fundamental to the success of a national endeavour, thus ensuring that liberal democratic values of the UK and our allies are embedded into future technologies, and that 6G meets our societal and industrial needs.

Minister Lopez, Minister of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), expressed a desire for the UK to hone and develop its traditional telecom strengths to ensure resilience and drive economic growth, so that the UK can maintain a position of global influence in telecoms through a leading role in research and standards development. The Government is considering how best to support future wireless technologies by incentivising investment, working with international partners, and ensuring the legal and regulatory framework best supports innovation and growth.

Dr Tatipamula and Prof Dohler of Ericsson Silicon Valley stressed the importance of a coherent systems approach leveraging the UK’s strengths in “communications, computing, control (AI) and sensing”, with strong emphasis on international and industry-academia collaboration. Dr Gianchandani from the National Science Foundation (NSF) highlighted the success of the US’s Resilient Intelligent Next Generation Systems (RINGS) program – a public-private partnership to advance the development of 6G.

The workshop explored approaches that attract practical engagement, intellectual guidance, and resource investment to build the research and innovation programmes needed for the UK community to play a leading role in the creation future wireless systems.
