The strong momentum for 5G continues.
5G is on a roll. During the second quarter of 2019 several markets switched on 5G following the introduction of new 5G-compatible smartphones. Some communications service providers have set ambitious targets of reaching up to 90 percent population coverage within the first year. As 5G devices increasingly become available and more service providers launch 5G, over 10 million 5G subscriptions1 are projected worldwide by the end of 2019. Looking ahead, in the first five years, 5G subscription uptake is expected to be significantly faster than that of LTE, following its launch back in 2009.

On a global level, 5G network deployments are expected to ramp up during 2020, creating the foundation for massive adoption of 5G subscriptions. Most new 5G subscribers will be users trading up their 4G handsets to 5G-compatible devices following 5G services launching in their market. By the end of the period, it is also likely that many young users in mature markets will get a 5G smartphone as their first device.

Given the momentum in the market, we have increased our forecast for 5G subscriptions, and now expect there to be 1.9 billion 5G subscriptions for enhanced mobile broadband by the end of 2024. This will account for over 20 percent of all mobile subscriptions at that time. The peak of LTE subscriptions is projected for 2022, at around 5.3 billion subscriptions, with the number declining slowly thereafter. However, LTE will remain the dominant mobile access technology by subscription for the foreseeable future, and it is projected to have nearly 5 billion subscriptions at the end of 2024.

8.8 billion Cellular IoT connections and fixed wireless access (FWA) subscriptions supporting new use cases will come in addition to the mobile subscriptions shown in the graph in the report.

There are 327 LTE or LTE-Advanced networks using 1800 MHz (Band 3) spectrum.

Far more LTE networks have been deployed at 1800 MHz (band 3) than in any other frequency band. Band 3 is now widely used throughout Europe, APAC, MEA and is also deployed in selected countries in South America. It has become a core band for LTE deployments. There are mobile and FWA LTE networks in 137 countries/territories using 1800 MHz either as a single band for the provision of services or as part of a multi-band deployment. Band 3 is now used by just over 46% of all LTE or LTE-Advanced network operators worldwide (down slightly on the previous report as the number of new LTE network launches has outpaced the number of new networks adopting 1800 MHz). The adoption of 1800 MHz worldwide has greatly assisted international roaming for mobile broadband services.

We have identified 327 LTE or LTE-Advanced networks that are using 1800 MHz (Band 3). Data is taken from GSA’s NTS database, correct as of 4 January 2019, and includes mobile and FWA LTE networks.

7,847 LTE devices announced by 546 suppliers

This updated report was published by GSA on April 5, 2017 and confirms the mainstream LTE user devices ecosystem and fast developing support for LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro systems. As a result of our latest research and verification process we have increased to 7,847 the number of LTE user devices we have verified as announced in the market, coming from 546 suppliers. This is over 77% higher than the number of devices we reported in February 2016. The number of suppliers grew 48% in the same period.

The report summarises the device support for each of the main operating FDD and TDD frequency bands and also addresses support for the LTE-based LPWA cellular IoT technologies now developing in the market.

Granularity of the report and related GAMBoD database:

UE Categories 0, 1, M1, NB1 (NB-IoT), 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 are quantified, confirming recent gains in device performance and expansion of choice, and support for the developing Cellular IoT market. Terminal support for VoLTE, eMBMS (LTE Broadcast), PTT and LTE-U features is also indicated.

FDD selector bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 62 and 66.

TDD selector bands 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44 and CBRS.

1800 MHz (3GPP Band 3) is the best supported spectrum for LTE deployments, having the largest LTE devices ecosystem (LTE1800). 62% of LTE devices can operate in band 3 spectrum.

The number of terminals that support LTE TDD (TD-LTE) is growing strongly. 3,074 devices i.e. over 39% of LTE devices support the LTE TDD (TD-LTE) mode.

The phone form factor has the largest ecosystem. 5,125 phones including operator and frequency variants are announced, giving an improved 65.3% share of all LTE device types. The LTE-connected tablet PC segment (644 devices) is growing strongly.

18.3% of LTE phones support VoLTE.

The most widely used spectrum for LTE network deployments is 1800 MHz (3GPP band 3).

274 LTE1800 networks are commercially launched in 119 countries.

1800 MHz is used in over 47% of LTE network deployments and also has the largest user devices ecosystem. Over 61% of LTE user terminals can operate in the 1800 MHz band.
