Across the North African and Sub-Sahara region, GSA is currently tracking 604 public networks including LTE, LTE-Advanced, 5G and fixed wireless access. 2G and 3G networks are being switched off, non-terrestrial satellite services are being launched, and 5G Standalone is in the early stages of being evaluated, trialled and deployed.

What is the true status of 4G and 5G connectivity in Africa? What role will non-terrestrial networks play? And how will the availability of spectrum shape the future of connectivity across the continent?

In this regional spotlight webinar, the GSA Research team share the latest data on:

  • Status of LTE and LTE-Advanced across Africa, is the continent still behind its peers or are we starting to see an expansion in line with the rest of world?
  • 5G in Africa – is it being held back by LTE rollouts and an abundance of earlier-generation devices?
  • Recent spectrum assignments and auctions
  • The situation with 2G and 3G switch off
  • Satellite NTN services, Africa has big potential for these services, but is this reflected in rollouts by operators and satellite providers?

LTE Ecosystem August 2023

GSA monitors and researches worldwide mobile broadband developments and publishes facts, statistics and trends. This report confirms that 24,942 LTE user devices have been announced — including commercial 5G devices also supporting LTE — from 1,011 manufacturers, and analyses the main developments and trends.

This report covers LTE frequency-division duplex (FDD) and time-division duplex (TDD) models, as well as LTE-related cellular IoT devices standardised by 3GPP as user equipment Cat-M1 and -M2 and Cat-NB1 and -NB2.

Although 5G grabs the headlines, LTE still dominates global mobile telecom services. There are 816 operators with commercially launched public mobile or broadband fixed wireless access networks see GSA’s report Public Networks and Operators: GAMBoD Database Snapshot, July 2023).

There were 6.2 billion LTE subscriptions globally by the end of 1Q21, according to July 2021 figures from Omdia. Given this huge market, it is not surprising that there is a vibrant number of technology suppliers supporting operators with LTE networks and within that, a large number of vendors selling a huge array of devices.
