5G Market Update: Executive Summary – August 2021

Updated 5G Network Status

176 commercial 5G networks launched worldwide

By mid-August 2021 461 operators in 137 countries/territories were investing in 5G, including trials, acquisition of licences, planning, network deployment and launches. (This number excludes nearly 200 additional companies awarded spectrum in the US CBRS PAL auction, which could potentially be used for 5G).

Of those, a total of 176 operators in 72 countries/territories had launched one or more 3GPP-compliant 5G services.

166 operators in 67 countries/territories had launched 3GPP-compliant 5G mobile services. 63 operators in 34 countries/territories had launched 3GPP-compliant 5G FWA or home broadband services.

Five operators had announced soft launches of their 5G networks that are not counted in the above launch figures.

Thirteen operators had launched commercial public 5G SA networks (plus one possible launch to be confirmed). 45 others are planning / deploying 5G SA for public networks, and 23 operators are involved in tests/trials.

Over 600 commercially available 5G devices

GSA has catalogued 938 announced 5G devices, up by 350 from 588 in six months

GSA has identified 450 announced 5G phones, up from 351 in Jan 2021.

There are at least 608 commercially available 5G devices, up more than 66% in six months.

Global LTE Subscriptions Q3 2017

LTE Subscriptions Are Now More Than 32% Of All Global Mobile Subscriptions

GSA confirms that LTE subscriptions now account for 32.4% of all mobile subscriptions globally. Analysing the latest information, provided to GSA by Ovum, shows growth of nearly 838 million new LTE subscriptions in the year to September 2017 compared to nearly 776 million the year earlier. That equated to a 49.2% rise over the twelve-month period.

Spectrum used for LTE – July 2017 update

Latest update from GSA on the number of operators using the main frequency bands for LTE.

Band 3, 1800 MHz continues to be the most popular band, followed by 800 MHZ band 20 and 2.6 GHz band 7.
