4G-5G FWA IoDT – White Paper – a key activity for optimised end user experience.

Introduction

4G/5G FWA is already one of the main choices for service providers to propose home broadband services today. According to the latest statistics from GSA published in June 2021, there are 436 service providers worldwide offering 4G or 5G FWA services in 171 countries / territories. However FWA will not stop there, and significant grow this expected in the next couple of years.

Hence, the 4G/5G FWA device market is developing fast with shipments growing annually by approximately 15%~20%. In that context, the Interoperability Device Tests (IoDT) between terminals and 4G/5G networks become increasingly important. How to achieve excellent network performance through IoDT is a challenge shared by both terminal and network equipment vendors.

5G’s large bandwidth and Massive MIMO technologies provide ultra-fast and ultra-large capacity cells for FWA users. This allows FWA user experience similar to the one of fiber home broadband users. To ensure this best-of-breed experience is delivered, it is recommended that FWA device vendors and network infrastructure vendors jointly perform IoDT test before devices are introduced in the market in order to ensure optimal experience for 4G/5G FWA users.

Some industry-leading CPE vendors already actively participated in 5G FWA IoDT test and certification activities. These tests allowed them to achieve excellent performance in service providers’ commercial networks and naturally became highly recognized by service providers. More 5G FWA device vendors are welcome to participate in 5G FWA IoDT test and certification. This contributes in accelerating service providers’ strategies positioning 5G FWA as a natural component of their home broadband connectivity services by leveraging a more diversified FWA device ecosystem with better performance. Given 5G’s faster pace of adoption and the variety of 5G configurations, the industry needs to accelerate on the IoDT 5G FWA domain.

Indoor 5G

Statistics show that more than 70% of services in 4G occur indoors, and industry predictions show that this percentage will surpass 80% as 5G spread service diversity and extends business boundaries. Based on this, we can see that Indoor 5G mobile networks will become an essential part of operators’ core competitiveness.

5G Indoor

5G network scenarios and performance requirements

Most people spend indoors more than half of their time every day. 5G will usher in the possibilities of home VR, holographic communication, and HD mobile office services, driving potential user demands. Cloud VR live broadcasting of games, athletic events, and concerts delivers an immersive, near-real-life experience for users.

5G will be closely related to vertical industries, which were completely independent of each other in the past. For example, as different as the automobile and communications industries may be, in the 5G era they can spawn applications such as remote vehicle diagnosis, remote driving, and automatic driving. Together with operators and partners, Huawei has embarked on explorations of 5G applications in dozens of vertical industries, including but not limited to, smart new media, smart mining, smart port, smart factory, smart healthcare, smart grid, smart education, city security, electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), smart agriculture, and smart IoV. With the global deployment of 5G and the participation of more partners, 5G is going to create cross-industry applications.

5G Automation – a full 80% of mobile operators worldwide say that automation will be the most important way to reduce the operating cost of their next generation networks.

Huawei has identified seven scenarios, within the lifecycle of the mobile network, which can be automated in a step-by-step manner. Within each scenario, the operator can implement different levels of automation, starting with 4G and evolving in the 5G era.

Currently, the OPEX of telecom operators remains high. With the advent of the 5G era, networks become much more complex, posing the following challenges: difficult network O&M due to coexistence of multiple RATs, multiple frequency bands, and HetNet; unleashing the full potential of new technologies, such as Massive MIMO; coordinating among a variety of services in real-time while ensuring service experience.

Intelligent technologies need to be introduced at edge, local, and cloud to build a three-layer autonomous driving network architecture. Mobile networks are distributed with massive sites, and there are a lot of real- time processing requirements. Local intelligence should be implemented with the coordination between site nodes and domain nodes so as to realise intra-layer autonomy and efficient collaboration.

Evolution towards autonomous driving networks cannot be accomplished at one stroke. It should be approached scenario by scenario. This white paper aims to share Huawei’s insights and initiatives in this brand-new field, and accelerate the process of all-scenario autonomous driving mobile networks.

Focusing on operations throughout the entire lifecycle, the white paper describes seven key scenarios and analyses five key capabilities for each of these scenarios. It can be an insightful reference to inspire the way towards autonomous driving networks for the telecom industry.

LTE Evolution to Build All Business Foundation is a white paper from Huawei that considers how LTE has completely changed the landscape of mobile broadband and everyone’s daily life, brought huge revenues to most mobile operators. However operators are now concerning about how to boost the network capacity and enhance user experience, how to enable new business for new revenue growth, and how to improve the investment efficiency. In recent years, LTE standards and industry are evolving not only to overtake all 2G and 3G services, but also to enable all business as the foundation of the next decade. This white paper presents an overview of how shall we redefine LTE towards the 2020s to address the challenges regarding use experience and network capacity and bring sustainable revenues.

The introduction and increasing use of mobile devices (e.g., smart phones and tablets) and various mobile applications have dramatically changed mobile communications systems and upgraded the cellular technologies from one generation to another. As the dominant 4G technology, LTE, also known as Evolved Universal Terrestrial Access Network (E-UTRAN), was developed by 3GPP starting in 2004 to meet the requirements of diverse mobile applications. LTE is a release-based technology family. In every one to two years, a new release of various key features is specified to meet the requirements of emerging use cases, to support technologies from latest researches, and to address practical issues seen in real deployments.

In the past decade, the LTE family has grown to include LTE, LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro and now its further evolution towards satisfying IMT-2020 (a.k.a. 5G) requirements and use cases. On one hand, LTE standards are evolving to ensure ubiquitous evolved mobile broadband (eMBB) experience in terms of latency, coverage, and throughput. On the other hand, LTE standards continue to develop to enable business expansion into vertical markets, e.g., IoT, V2X, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and industry automation by means of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). In addition, LTE is evolving to support the operation of other RATs by means of technologies such as E-UTRAN/NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC).

The fifth generation of mobile communications technology (5G) represents the main direction of future network development. It promises to enable the transition from broadband interconnection between people to the connectivity of everything, while reshaping the way we live and work.

On December 20th, 2017, 3GPP published the first 5G New Radio (NR) standards at its 78th RAN plenary meeting in Lisbon, Portugal and 3GPP approved the standalone version of the 5G NR standard at the plenary meeting on June 14th, 2018. This release sets out the technical specifications of NR in the first phase of 5G deployment, speeding up 5G’s commercial use.

More than 20 global operators have begun to set up 5G first office application (FOA) sites or pre-commercial sites. Various services, such as virtual reality (VR) and telemedicine, will flourish in a new, intelligent fully connected world. As the majority of daily activities take place indoors, the industry urgently requires the critical tasks of further research into 5G’s services requirements and a deeper exploration into viable network deployment strategies.

Indoor areas host the highest concentration of mobile users and traffic. These scenarios are an essential business domain for carriers and tower vendors, especially in enterprise parks and office buildings where Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is currently gaining considerable ground. In BYOD-prominent venues, it is of great value to provide indoor coverage and capacity solutions that allow multiple operators to share networks. Such solutions are able to ensure the maximum coverage of both users and terminals regardless of the coverage provided for employees, users, and visitors.

5G networks will offer an unprecedented leap in bandwidth speeds in comparison to previous mobile networks. For example, downlink peak data throughput could reach 20 Gbps, while uplink peak data rates could be as high as 10 Gbps. 5G will also reduce latency and improve overall network efficiency. Streamlining network architectures will deliver end-to-end latency requirements of less than 5 ms. This will allow 5G to offer ultra-reliable low-latency communication for machine-to-machine and public safety applications.

As it delivers new infrastructure solutions, 5G will depend on an end-to-end digital service transformation, which will minimise OPEX, deliver efficiencies, and drive revenue growth. For 5G to deliver an attractive business model to mobile network operators and their customers, the network must enable efficient provisioning of a wide variety of new services for varied customers with different service level needs and performance requirements. Not only will operators need to provide services to customers across enterprise verticals efficiently, they will need to commercialize those services rapidly and effectively.

This whitepaper explores the top 10 applications that will harness the versatile capabilities of 5G.
