Chipsets Report June 2025

GSA’s latest Chipsets report confirms that the number of 5G chipsets increased steadily throughout 2023 and 2024, albeit at a much slower rate. GSA expects growth to continue throughout the rest of 2025, with new modems and mobile processors and platforms due from several players. This will continue to underpin the increasingly broad choice of commercially available 5G devices.

GSA closely monitors 5G chipset capabilities, including support for standalone networks. Among commercially available 5G chipsets, 79% explicitly state support for 5G standalone networks. While detailed information on spectrum support and other features varies, 21 chipsets are known to support voice over New Radio.

Apart from 5G-capable chipsets, GSA has identified 41 commercially available discrete LTE modem chipsets from eight vendors. However, the largest category in the GSA database comprises commercially launched LTE mobile processors and platforms, excluding those specifically designed for IoT applications and those capable of 5G. A total of 374 such chipsets come from 26 vendors.

Other trends highlighted in this update include support for VoLTE, eMBMS and unlicensed spectrum, along with 3GPP IoT chipsets.

GSA launches new working group to track, report and promote status of 5G RedCap deployments, devices and service launches globally

The Global mobile Suppliers Association today announced the establishment of a new RedCap Special Interest Group to bring together leading telecommunications companies wishing to track, boost and promote the ecosystem for 5G RedCap network deployments, connected IoT devices, FWA devices and service launches.

5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) devices are designed to cater to Internet of Things (IoT) use cases with requirements on low device complexity and power consumption but moderate requirements on peak data rates. This technology is built upon the 5G NR (New Radio) standard and aims to offer a balanced approach to connectivity, enabling implementation and operation of cost- and energy-efficient devices for a wide range of IoT applications.

To deploy RedCap, operators must first have a 5G standalone network, making the ongoing expansion of 5G SA networks worldwide a guide to RedCap readiness. As of February 2025, GSA identified 154 operators in 63 countries investing in 5G standalone. When assessing the global status of 5G RedCap in this latest report, GSA identified 26 operators in 18 countries that are currently investing in RedCap technology, indicating the early stage of its development.

Joe Barrett, President of the Global mobile Suppliers Association, said: “5G RedCap is still in its initial stages of development and growth, particularly when it comes to compatible devices and chipsets. Nevertheless, indications of future growth for 5G RedCap are already emerging. This is why it is time for the industry ecosystem to now work together to promote, track and report on the true status of the technology and collectively expand the RedCap ecosystem globally.

“5G RedCap’s role as the bridge for mid-tier IoT applications, coupled with the clear demand for IoT connectivity providers based on LTE technologies, indicates a promising market, with significant growth expected in the medium to long term, especially as 5G New Radio continues its global expansion and the capabilities of LTE technologies diminish. RedCap can also help serving some FWA scenarios thanks to its lower cost device capabilities.”

The new GSA RedCap SIG brings together vendors from across the ecosystem to track and promote the status of RedCap products, features and mobile networks. SIG Partners and Members can promote their RedCap-enabled products via the GSA website and GAMBoD databases, while the GSA Research Team will support the work of the SIG with regular industry reports and webinars on the global status of the technology.

Founding members of the 5G RedCap SIG include Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, MediaTek, Qualcomm and VIAVI Solutions. Membership of GSA groups, which also cover areas of special interest including 4G/5G fixed wireless access and private mobile networks, is open to all GSA Executive & Ordinary Members and GSA Associates. Organisations subscribing to GSA as a Member or Associate benefit from unlimited access for every employee to GSA’s unique GAMBoD databases.

This month GSA also published its latest report on 5G RedCap, which is available for download here. This new report delves into what 5G RedCap entails and its advantages for operators, and introduces enhanced RedCap (eRedCap) and the potential in this nascent area to shape the ecosystem.

On 29th April 2025, the GSA 5G RedCap SIG, together with the GSA Research Team, will dig into the latest market trends and data on industry adoption of 5G RedCap for IoT and share how the work of the 5G RedCap SIG will support the ecosystem in driving further growth. You can register for the webinar here: https://gsacom.com/group/redcap-sig/

For more information on 5G RedCap IoT, and the work of the GSA RedCap Special Interest Group, please visit https://gsacom.com/group/redcap-marketing-special-interest-group/.

Chipsets December-2023 Summary Report

The market for cellular modem chipsets has advanced quickly in the past two years as 5G chipsets have become more widely available. In 2021, there was a 144% increase in the number of 5G New Radio mobile processors and platforms launched, and the number of 5G modems grew 85%. This continued in 2022, with mobile processors growing by 81% year-on-year in 1Q22 and by 42% in modems. Throughout 2023, this growth has continued, although at a much slower pace. So far, the number of launched mobile processors has grown by 25%, and modems have risen by 11%.

GSA’s online GAMBoD database includes the ability to search for chipsets and selected features by company and by chipset type. This report highlights the state of the market for cellular modem chipsets based on the data in the database. The focus of this report is discrete cellular modem chipsets, as well as mobile processors, system-on-chips and platforms (only those containing modems) used in devices with LTE and 5G connectivity, in addition to chipsets designed for devices using 3GPP-defined IoT technologies.

In addition, GSA has started collating information about several additional chipset subsystems for devices using 3GPP technologies including cellular front-end chipsets and radio-frequency integrated circuits, power amplifiers, as well as antenna modules and antenna-in-package solutions for millimetre-wave spectrum (modules containing antennas plus additional systems such as RF transceivers, power amplifiers, power management ICs or beam steering).

GSA is not collating data about individual components such as filters, duplexers, antennas or antenna switches, nor silicon designed primarily for base stations used as network infrastructure. Nor do we track reference designs for complete platforms or discrete components where the vendor is not involved beyond creation of IP for licensing. However, we do include chipsets designed for enterprise and residential small cells and fixed wireless access applications, as these can be considered devices (femtocells are included in the GAMBoD database).

There is a growing choice of modem and mobile processor chipsets for 5G devices, with products currently available from seven key players. In the latest report update, GSA identifies 87 commercially available 5G mobile processors and platforms and 19 commercially available discrete 5G modems, as well as six pre-commercial 5G processors and platforms, discrete cellular modems or automotive platforms. The number of 5G chipsets has increased steadily throughout 2023 and this looks set to continue in 2024, with new modems and mobile processors and platforms due from several players. This will continue to underpin the increasingly broad choice of commercially available 5G devices.
